Support small businesses this Christmas

Amazon has changed the way we shop for Christmas. You're only ever a few clicks away from a pile of presents under your tree, and sometimes it doesn't seem worth it to even look elsewhere. Time is precious, after all! But is this really the right choice?

Local shops and smaller British businesses would love your support this Christmas. Shopping with them helps people in your community, helps the UK economy and can give you a warm, fuzzy feeling that an Amazon box on your doorstep won't.

In 2021, e-commerce sales were nearly 19% of all retail sales. This is forecasted to reach 24% of global retail sales by 2026. Amazon has a large share of the e-commerce pie, which isn't surprising as 42% of UK online customers prefer to buy all their gifts through one platform (figures from Statista). Last month, a survey in the UK by Statista showed that a whopping 89% of respondents buy Christmas gifts at Amazon.

Shop small, shop online

All online shopping has seen a massive uplift - not simply Amazon - and supporting small, local businesses via e-commerce platforms has never been more popular. Platforms such as Etsy, a global marketplace full of 1,000’s of creative sellers, and Not On The High Street, home to over 5,000 small creative businesses, have become increasingly popular. These platforms allow sellers to reach a wider audience, and with sellers from across the UK, you’ll easily find unique gifts for everyone on your list!

Statistics show online stores are the preferred purchase location among UK consumers during the holiday season.

SMEs not confident about the Christmas period

Christmas is a prime season for many businesses to make a substantial portion of their annual revenue and to give that last financial push to finish the year. However, the double-digit inflation rate doesn't spell success for traders this season.

In fact, a Barclaycard survey published last month finding that 50% of consumers were planning to cut back on presents, food and drink, and socialising this Christmas.

Why support small businesses this Christmas?

  • Support creativity and innovation. Your local creatives, whether they are just starting out or are established small businesses, need your continued support to thrive.

  • A small business values your custom. You'll likely receive better service and a better product as a result.

  • SMEs boost the UK economy and create employment opportunities. By supporting local businesses, you are keeping money in the community and contributing to small business growth and success.

  • It's more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Shopping in local bricks and mortar shops allows you to reduce your carbon footprint. With less plastic and packaging waste, there are decreased CO2 emissions from delivery drivers or shoppers travelling to out-of-town shopping centres.

  • Small businesses build a stronger community. They support other local businesses and encourage entrepreneurs. Small businesses bring individuality to a community, and encourage visits to the high street. When shopping at a small business, you get an authentic experience where you experience personal connections.
