Watch our interview with England rugby legend Ollie Phillips

Ollie Phillips began investing with rebuildingsociety.com in Spring 2020, using his annual ISA allowance to lend to his property company, Spod Properties Limited.

Phillips is the most successful England Rugby Sevens captain of all time, having led his team to three World Series Cup victories. Following his retirement from professional rugby in 2014, he’s broken a Guinness World Record, founded a leadership business, and is Director for Real Estate & Construction at PWC.

From starting with the purchase of a house in multiple occupation (HMO), Phillips and his wife Lucy now own eight properties in total. Spod Properties Ltd was set up to manage their growing portfolio of investments.

I learnt about the Innovative Finance ISA from my best friend. He and I have always looked at creative ways of investing...so when we heard about the Innovative Finance ISA and the Director's Loan Account ISA it perked our interest.

We did some digging, and when we found out that it also came also with HMRC approval; that was enough for us to be confident and comfortable that this was a great way forward for us to invest in property.

By using the Director’s Loan Account IFISA to lend to his property business through his ISA wrapper, Phillips can receive interest and save tax, and the business has access to the capital.

Please note that tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in future. Capital is at risk, and there is no FSCS protection.

Combining an Innovative Finance ISA with a formalised Director’s Loan is a cheaper and quicker way to secure business funding than borrowing from a bank, with benefits for both the investor and the business.

Would we do it again next year? Definitely.
